A raised pedestrian crossing – along with a push-button signal for pedestrians – was installed recently on Elgin Avenue, in front of the Immigration Department and Government Administration Building.

“This crossing will help Government Administration Building employees and visitors, who have parked in the new parking area on Humber Lane, to cross the street safely,” said the National Roads Authority’s Transportation Planner Marion Pandohie.

The flow of pedestrians to and from the Glass House will steadily increase, she added, once the new government parking lot opens early next month.

When pushed, the signal triggers orange flashing lights, alerting motorists to stop. However, drivers are asked to make a practice of slowing down when approaching the crossing.

Meanwhile, pedestrians are asked to be patient, and to look both ways before crossing the street. “Because the pedestrian crossing is new, it will take everyone some time to get used to it,” Mrs Pandohie said.

Currently, motorists park their vehicles in the lot next to the Glass House. However, the lot is the site of the new Government Administration Building, which will soon be under construction. Once building starts, that space will become unavailable for parking, Mrs Pandohie explained.
